The definitions of beauty changes from culture to culture and time to time, but the use of makeup and cosmetics to enhance that beauty is universal. The eyes and lips get special attention in Western cultures, but are by no means the only cosmetic targets. Beauty marks and tattoos are gaining in acceptance and popularity.

Makeup and cosmetics are manufactured and marketed by many companies from small “mom and pop” shops to multinational giants. The quality of the cosmetics is widely discussed and argued by the fans of the various brands. While price may be a guide to quality, the correlation is not absolute. Marketing costs are included in the final cost of the make-up and can be a substantial part of the market price of some name brand cosmetics.

One problem in comparing the quality of various cosmetics and makeup is the subjective desire of certain traits of the makeup. Another is the intended use of the cosmetics. Obviously, the need for makeup for an actor or actress to be used in a stage production can be very different than the cosmetics for a work day or an evening at play.

The bottom line is to know what you want to accomplish with the use of makeup. Study the effects of makeup on others, especially on those of similar skin and complections as yourself. Don’t be afraid to try new products. And don’t hesitate to seek a refund if the makeup and cosmetics do not live up to their advertised attributes.
